Signs your heat pump needs repair
Warm air in cooling mode
The most common summer complaint. On an AC this means a handful of possible causes; on a heat pump there is one more, the reversing valve. If the valve is stuck part way, the system can run and sound normal while doing almost nothing. Sorting that from a low charge or a dirty coil is the first job.
Ice in summer
Frost on the outdoor coil in cooling mode is never normal. It points to low refrigerant, restricted airflow, or a sensor fault telling the unit the wrong thing about coil temperature. Shut cooling off, let it thaw, and call.
Stuck in defrost, or defrosting constantly
In heating mode the outdoor coil will frost and the unit will clear it periodically. If it defrosts every few minutes, never defrosts and ices solid, or blows cold air indoors for long stretches, the defrost board, its sensor, or the reversing valve is the likely fault.
Error codes on the indoor head or thermostat
Ductless systems flash codes or show them on the remote. Communication errors between the head and the outdoor unit, sensor faults, and high or low pressure trips all have specific codes. Note the code before you clear it; it saves diagnostic time.
Water from the indoor head
On a mini-split this is nearly always a blocked condensate drain or a failed condensate pump. In Niagara’s humidity the drain line grows algae quickly. It is a nuisance rather than a failure, but it will ruin drywall if ignored.
Loud outdoor unit or a compressor that will not start
Inverter compressors normally change speed and pitch. A grinding, rattling, or buzzing that is new, or an outdoor unit that clicks and never starts, is worth a visit.
Repair or replace on a heat pump
Heat pumps carry some different math from a basic AC.
- Wear parts (capacitors, contactors, fan motors, sensors, condensate pumps): repair. These are the same parts as any AC and cost about the same.
- Reversing valve: repairable, and usually worth it on a unit under 10 years old. It is a labour-heavy job because the refrigerant circuit is opened.
- Inverter board or outdoor control board: repairable, price depends heavily on the brand. If the board is under a parts warranty, this is labour only. If not, we will tell you where the cost sits relative to the unit’s age.
- Compressor: on a unit installed in the last decade, check the warranty first; many cover the compressor for 10 years when registered. On an older conventional heat pump, compressor failure is typically the replacement point.
- Refrigerant: most heat pumps installed in Niagara before 2025 use R-410A, which remains available for service. Newer equipment uses R-454B or R-32, which require their own handling procedures and tools. We service both.

How a heat pump repair visit works
- Phone triage. Ducted or ductless, brand if known, the symptom, and any error code. Whether it is under a rebate-program installation matters for paperwork.
- Arrival window. An honest one, especially during a heat event.
- Diagnosis. Thermostat or controller settings first (a surprising number of “faults” are a mode set wrong after a power outage), then filter and airflow, then the outdoor unit: pressures, superheat and subcooling, reversing valve operation, defrost control, sensor readings, inverter and fan amp draw, and the error log where the equipment stores one.
- Upfront quote. The fault in plain language and a fixed price. If a part is under warranty we say so.
- Repair. Common parts from truck stock; brand-specific boards and reversing valves ordered with a stated timeline.

What affects the cost
- Ducted versus ductless. Multi-head ductless systems have more sensors, more drains, and more communication wiring to trace.
- Brand and parts availability. Some boards are stocked locally; others are ordered.
- Warranty status. Registration at installation is the difference between a parts-and-labour bill and a labour-only one.
- Reversing valve or compressor work. Opening the refrigerant circuit means recovery, evacuation, and recharge, which is more labour than a bolt-on part.
- Access. Outdoor units on a bracket two storeys up or in a tight side yard take longer.
- Electrical. A heat pump replacing an AC often draws differently. If the fault is a breaker or disconnect on the house side, that is an electrician’s job with an ESA notification.
What Niagara heat pump repair has to account for
Humid summers and long shoulder seasons
Between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, the cooling load in July is as much about moisture as temperature. A heat pump sized for heating a leaky older house may be oversized for cooling and short cycle in summer, which leaves the house cool but clammy. Inverter systems handle this better than single-stage units, but only if the controls are set up correctly. Niagara’s long, mild spring and fall are where heat pumps earn their keep, running efficiently for months when a gas furnace would be cycling.
Ductless in postwar bungalows and century homes
A large share of Niagara heat pumps are ductless systems in homes that were built with radiators or electric baseboards: 1950s bungalows in Stamford and Welland, wartime housing, and the century homes of downtown St. Catharines and Fort Erie’s Bridgeburg. Common problems here are flare fittings that were under-torqued at installation and now leak, line sets run through uninsulated wall cavities, and indoor heads mounted where they cannot drain properly.
Older electrical panels
A heat pump added to a home with an older 100-amp panel can push the panel close to its limit. Nuisance breaker trips in a heat wave, when the range, the dryer, and the heat pump all run together, are an electrical capacity problem and not a heat pump fault. We test on the equipment side and refer the panel side to a licensed electrician.
Cottonwood and pollen
Same problem as any outdoor coil: the June fluff near the canal, the creeks, and mature streets mats the fins, head pressure climbs, and an inverter system will throttle back or trip on high pressure. A coil cleaning fixes it. Annual maintenance keeps it from recurring.
Refrigerant rules and licensing
New heat pumps for the Canadian market moved off R-410A at the start of 2025 toward R-454B and R-32. Handling any of them requires the Ozone Depletion Prevention certification under Ontario Regulation 463/10, and residential air conditioning is a compulsory trade under Skilled Trades Ontario (313A or 313D). Where a heat pump is paired with a gas furnace as backup, the gas side is TSSA-licensed work.
Rebate installations
Many Niagara heat pumps were installed under rebate programs. The current one, Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings program run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas, requires a participating contractor and pre-approval for the installation itself. Repairs afterward can be done by any qualified technician; keep your installation paperwork because warranty registration usually happened through the installer.

Do you repair ductless mini-split heat pumps?
Yes. We service both conventional ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits, which have become common in Niagara homes. Mini-split faults often involve drainage, sensor, or communication errors between the indoor head and outdoor unit, all of which are diagnosable and repairable.
Why is my heat pump blowing warm air in cooling mode?
